About UCBackup Services

UCBackup services use IBM’s Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM).  When the TSM software is installed on a backup client system, and the scheduler program is kept running, TSM will automatically detect any changes made to the hard drive and backup the data to the UCBackup server once a day.  All backups are performed through the campus network.

The backed-up data can be easily accessed by the TSM software and restored to the client from the UCBackup Server through the campus network.

TSM Features:

• Backing up data allows restoration of accidentally deleted files.

• In the event of hard drive failures, backed-up data can be accessed after reinstalling the operating system and TSM software.

• TSM Backup allows easy transfer of data files for workstation migrations.  Please note TSM not a migration tool and there are more efficient migrations processes available. 

• TSM retains backups for up to five of the most recently modified versions of files, so that older versions can be restored. Deleted files can be recovered up to 30 days after deletion (grace period).

• Provide the correct permissions are in place, backed-up data can be accessed through the campus network with any computer of the same type as the original client, with the TSM software installed.

• The TSM scheduler program performs backup functions automatically, requiring no user attention.

• After the initial full backup of a client, TSM performs only incremental backups, i.e., when changes are made to files or directories on the client.

• Password-protected accounts provide security to your backed-up data. More security information here

• For increased data protection, we maintain an offsite repository containing updated copies of all backed-up files.

• TSM is supported on Windows, Mac OS, and most UNIX/Linux platforms.

• UCBackup services charges are based on the amount of data stored (occupancy). Charges for each computer are calculated as follows:

$0.30/month per gigabyte with $1.00 min.

Backup of Server's will include the following:
- Ability to apply different retention policies to the backed up data.   
- Separate system for server backups.
- Ability to use TSM for Databases to backup live databases (This is extra software and is not include).
