About UCBackup Costs

The charge for backup/archive is $0.30*/month per GB of data stored on backup media.   The total monthly cost for any client system will vary depending on the retention settings and amount of new/changed data on the system.

The minimum and maximum* expected total backup cost per month for a client system can be calculated with the following formula:
((amt_of_data * num_versions) * tape_pools) * cost

The archive cost per month for a client system can be calculated with the following formula:

((amt_of_data * tape_pools) * cost)

The total cost for the duration of the archive can be calculated with the following formula:

((amt_of_data * tape_pools) * cost) * retention_period

  1. Costs for backup assuming the following:
    • 1 GB of data to backup
    • 5 version retention (standard)
    • 1 onsite and 1 offsite tape copy (standard)
    • $0.50 / GB per month

      Minimum cost will be ((1GB * 1 version) * 2 copies) * $0.50/GB = $1/Month
      Maximum cost will be ((1GB * 5 versions) * 2 copies) * $0.50/GB = $5/Month

NOTE: For most backup client systems the average cost will be between the minimum and maximum and will depend on the amount of changes and new data on the file systems.   Versioning provides the maximum data protection by allowing point in time recovery of older versions of the data.

NOTE: The minimum monthly charge for UCBackup services is $1.00.

  2. Costs for archive assuming the following:
    • 1 GB of data to archive (one version)
    • 1 onsite and 1 offsite copy (standard)
    • $0.50 / GB per month
    • 12 month retention period (standard)

Monthly archive cost will be ((1GB * 2 copies) * $0.50/month per GB) = $1.00
Cost for the duration of this archive will be ($1.00 / month * 12 months) = $12.00

* Please note that the maximum cost is only valid if there are no major changes in the structure or system.    For example if the file systems goes through a major reorganizations then this system can exceed the maximum cost - this will cause all "changed" paths to be consider new data to be backed up and all the old path will be expired in X number of days from the backup.

Other factors that can increase cost:
- system is rename.
- external USB, Firewire or Flash drives are added.
- Migrated to the new system and old backup are not removed
- Backing up unnecessary data

* $0.30/GB per month will begin June 1, 2007 and the rate change will be reflected in the July 2007 bills.    The bill for May will still be $0.50/GB.   PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS NEW PRICE WILL BE APPLIED AUTOMATICALLY.
